The Certification Guide

The Certification Guide

Every stone graded, every gram hallmarked.

Every diamond we use is graded by an independent laboratory, and every piece of our gold is tested and hallmarked by another. Here is what you receive, what it means, and how to check it yourself.

01 · The laboratory

Why we use IGI

The International Gemological Institute was founded in Antwerp in 1975 and grades diamonds in laboratories around the world. It was among the first laboratories to grade lab-grown diamonds, and today it is the one most of the industry relies on for them.

IGI has no stake in the stones it grades. Its gemmologists measure each diamond, judge its colour and clarity against fixed standards, and record the result under a unique report number that anyone can look up. That independence is the point: the report would read the same whoever had sent the stone.

02 · Beyond the report

A grade is a range

A report gives each diamond a grade, but every grade covers a span. Two stones can share the same colour and clarity on paper and still look noticeably different side by side.

The weaker endSame grade on paper
The stones we keepSame grade on paper

The weaker endA touch warmer, an inclusion more easily found. Still within the grade.

The stones we keepWhiter, cleaner and livelier. The strong end of the same grade.

So before any stone is set, one of our gemmologists examines it in person, and we keep only those from the strong end of their grade. The report tells you what a diamond is. That second look decides whether it becomes a Diamos piece.

03 · What you receive

Your documents

The report that comes with a piece depends on the size of the diamonds in it. Every diamond is covered, from the smallest accent stone to the centre stone.

Certifies the finished piece: its total diamond weight and the grades of its diamonds. Our smaller diamonds are always E or F in colour and VVS to VS in clarity.

Inside the laboratory

From stone to paper

  1. I

    Weighed

At IGI, each diamond is weighed on an electronic balance, to the hundredth of a carat.

  2. II

    Measured

Its length, width and depth are measured to the hundredth of a millimetre, and its proportions mapped: table, crown, pavilion and girdle.

  3. III

    Graded

Trained graders judge its colour against master stones of known colour, and its clarity at ten times magnification, to fixed standards.

  4. IV

    Inscribed and recorded

Larger stones have the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle. The report is issued and held in IGI's own records, where anyone can look it up.

04 · Reading a report

What the paper says

A grading report is a record of measurements, set out the same way for every stone. It does not describe beauty, and it does not give a price; it tells you exactly what the stone is, so that you can compare it fairly with any other.

Every grade on it, and what it means, is explained line by line in our diamond guide.

05 · Verification

Check it yourself

Every IGI report is held in IGI's own online records. You never need to take a printed certificate, ours or anyone's, on trust. It takes about a minute.

  1. I

    Find the report number

It is at the top of your report. You can also read it on the piece, or on the girdle of a larger diamond, with a jeweller's loupe.

  2. II

    Go to IGI

Open IGI's verification page at igi.org, or scan the QR code printed on your report.

  3. III

    Enter the number

IGI returns its record of the report, which you can view and download.

  4. IV

    Compare

Check that every detail matches your printed copy: weight, measurements and every grade.

06 · The gold

Hallmarked by BIS

The gold is certified too. Every piece is tested at an assaying centre licensed by the Bureau of Indian Standards and struck with three marks before it is sold.

Keep your reports safe

Your reports are your piece's record for life. Keep the originals somewhere safe, with a photograph or scan of each. You will want them for insurance, for valuations, and if you ever exchange or upgrade the piece.

Our lifetime exchange and loose diamond upgrades require the original reports, and a loose diamond must still carry its original laser inscription. Without the reports, an exchange may need re-certification at a fee, or may not be possible.

Questions

Is every diamond certified, even the small ones?

Yes. Diamonds under one carat are certified on an IGI Diamond Jewellery Report for the piece, and each diamond of one carat or more has its own IGI Full Diamond Grading Report.

Does the report say the diamond is lab grown?

Yes, clearly. Every IGI report for a lab-grown diamond states that it is laboratory grown, and also notes how it was grown.

How do I know a report is genuine?

Enter its number on IGI's verification page or scan its QR code. IGI shows you its own record, which should match your copy exactly.

Where is the report number on my piece?

For pieces with smaller diamonds, it is engraved on the piece. For diamonds of one carat and above, it is laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle, visible with a jeweller's loupe.

If two diamonds have the same report grades, are they the same?

Not necessarily. Each grade covers a range, which is why our gemmologists examine every stone and keep only those from the strong end of their grade.

What if I lose my report?

You can still view and download IGI's record online with the report number. Please also keep the original safe, as our exchange and upgrade programmes require it.

Is the gold certified too?

Yes. Every piece is hallmarked by a BIS-licensed assaying centre, with a unique HUID you can check in the BIS CARE app.
